Cristiano received today the Di Stéfano Trophy for Best Player in La Liga of last season, from the hands of the very Alfredo Di Stéfano.
Congratulations! You deserve.
Cristiano said: “Much remains. We are in the Copa del Rey final and we have taken a major step in the Champions League. The league is difficult but we must fight to the end.
Things personally with me are going well but what I want is to win a major trophy with Madrid.
It is an honour to receive this award from the hands of Alfredo Di Stefano and I want to thank everyone.”
Di Stefano said: “He is a great player and a team player, who makes all the fans happy.”
They have asked me to write about the project Madrid has of making Cristiano the new Di Stéfano.
I am flattered by this comparison; I was only a team player.
But if so, Madrid will have to construct a third stadium with his name, name him honorary president in the future, and above all when Cristiano is my age, Real Madrid will have to be there for his days of illnesses and doctors and other pampering the club provides for me.
However, inside Real Madrid you can only make history if it’s fulfilled with the following three conditions:
First: Obedience to the club.
There were many times when Santiago Bernabéu gave me orders that I obeyed without question.
Second: Affection for your teammates.
I enjoyed very much helping a player who needed it, my locker room was my family.
Third: Respect for the fans.
You have to play to entertain the crowd. Without forgetting that first you have to win.
In this life everything begins and everything ends. If you asked me to choose my successor, it would be that guy from Madeira, because he has overcome all of the obstacles life put in front of him.
Of course it would not be bad if Di Stéfano was the new Cristiano, and for me to have his 27 years.
