chats to Eurogoals about the moment his name was revealed, announcing him as the 2013 Ballon d’Or winner and just why he was so emotional.
In the year 2014 a man still almost has to excuse himself for showing his feelings …
Short interview with Irina, of course also about her relationship with Cristiano.
“On our way to Zurich Cristiano kept telling my mother that he would be fine if he doesn’t win. She was very nervous and she was worried about my brother. We all knew how much he wanted to win this award, yet he tried to calm my mother down.
Cristiano can’t stand it when my mother is uncomfortable. That’s why he kept telling her everything was fine, although he was probably the most nervous one that night. The presence of his siblings, girlfriend and son helped him a lot. And today we’re all tremendously proud of him.”
— Katia Aveiro to “RTP”
Katia called Cristiano the ‘pillar of the family’.
A golden role model
"The real Cristiano, the one I know, is the man millions of people saw at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala. A human, sensitive, humble, genuine person. And being Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t easy, nor is getting where he has, which he has done above all else through sheer professionalism.
Cristiano’s sacrifice, willpower, determination and dedication make him an example to be followed. Very few people are aware of the vital work he puts in on a daily basis, which takes place behind closed doors. From staying behind after training to perfect a particular aspect of his game to the extreme care he takes with his diet, getting the necessary rest at home and working at least two extra hours every day.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s commitment to his profession is such that, when he loses a match or things don’t come off the way he intends, he is down in the dumps for three days, which he spends trying to improve whatever didn’t work. He is always thinking about improving, because he is dissatisfied by nature. What better example can there be for young people than someone who sacrifices his personal life for his profession?
Ronaldo refuses to eat out on the majority of occasions because he is supremely aware of the demands of his profession. He also rejects 90% of the commercial deals that he is offered, as he has no interest in signing million-euro contracts every week. His bread and butter is football and that’s what he wants to focus on. How many others could say the same in his place?
Another example is his desire to help the needy, taking the initiative whenever is possible and, when it is up to him, never seeking out publicity for doing so.
For all these reasons and more, Cristiano Ronaldo is not just a worthy Ballon d’Or winner, but a golden role model.”
Beautiful words from someone who truly knows Cristiano, Cristiano’s agent since the beginning of his career. Mendes is also a father figure for Cristiano and the godfather of Cristiano’s son.
Cristiano Ronaldo - FIFA Ballon D’Or Speech (Portuguese, without the annoying translator)
“Good evening. There are no words to describe this moment.
Thank you to all of my teammates at Real Madrid, the National Team, as well as to all of my family who are present.
It’s an enormous honour (pride). Those who know me know what sacrifices it took me to win this Ballon D’Or.
I’d like to thank my manager (Jorge Mendes), my president (Florentino Perez) and everyone who came here with me.
I’d also like to mention Eusébio and Madiba (Nelson Mandela), they were important people for me.
My girlfriend, who is here, my mother, my son, it’s the first time he sees his father winning a Ballon D’Or.
And if I forgot anyone I do apologise because it’s a very emotional moment for me and I can’t speak. Thank you all.”
Pelé (twice): “God gives to those who deserve it.” Cristiano smiles.
